International Guests:

Men's Choir - Terra Mea, Sardinia

It was a welcome return for the choir Terra Mea (literally My Land) from Cagliari who astounded audiences in 2009, performing traditional Sardinian songs showcasing their extraordinary polyphonic style.  They sing in a close circle, a solo performer leading the melody with the choir as an accompanying chorus.  The unique sound of their quartet is particularly remarkable and a truly moving experience was guaranteed for the audience.

Hiroko Doi, Japan

We were delighted that festival regular, Hiroko Doi, has agreed to perform once again.  She qualified as a teacher of the Koto in 1981 at the renowned school of Miyagi Michio, continuing her studies and  achieving the highest level of performance in 1986.  She first appeared in Bulgaria in 1990 as part of a Japanese Cultural Day in Sofia.

Folkcorn, Holland

Folkcorn consists of four related musicians who perform early Dutch and Flemish folk music, some of their pieces dating from the 15th century!  Centuries ago, national borders and language were different than today and this has led to similarities between the early music and lyrics of Holland's present-day neighbours, Belgium and Germany.  Furthermore, the traditional lyrics and rhythms from soldiers, sailors, merchants and travelling musicians have contributed to their musical culture.

Leila Negrau with Oliver Roman Garcia, Reunion Island, Indian Ocean

Leila is a singer and a percussionist from Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean.  She has been performing since she was 11 years old and now writes her own songs inspired by the traditional music from the slaves called “Maloya” and “Sega”.  She creates her own style which is very powerful and passionate, mixing her music with the 'Blues of the Indian Ocean' derived from the old slave spirit of her Island.
She was accompanied on stage by guitarist Oliver Roman Garcia
